Who it is for

ABN AMRO car insurance in the Netherlands is intended for private individuals and self-employed professionals for cars with a Dutch registration.

Are you self-employed? Then you can insure the car privately if you occasionally use your car to drive from home to work or to a business relation, for example.

You need an ABN AMRO bank account to take out car insurance. Not yet a customer? A bank account is opened in no time.

Excess

Third-Party Liability Cover only covers damage you cause to other people and is therefore not subject to an excess.

With Third-Party Liability + Limited Cover and Third-Party Liability + Comprehensive Cover, you have an excess of €150 per occurrence in the event of a claim. If you have the damage to your car fixed through the ABN AMRO Claims Service, then this excess will lapse. This does not apply to window replacement, however, for which the excess is €75.

If your car is adequately secured, you do not have to pay an excess in case of theft, attempted theft, break-in or joyriding. The Motor Vehicle Certification Foundation has determined different security classes. If your car does not meet any of them, you will have an excess of 2.5% of your car's daily value and pay a minimum excess of €375.

If you have taken out the additional breakdown coverage and you get a temporary replacement car in case of damage, the rental company may have set an excess. Sometimes it is possible to reduce this excess for a fee.

Security classes

With a well-secured car, you do not have an excess in the event of (attempted) theft, burglary or joyriding. Stichting Certificering Motorrijtuigen has determined various security classes. If your car does not meet this requirement, you have an excess of 2.5% of the catalog value (with a minimum of €375).

Frequently asked questions

In the Netherlands, you are obliged to take out car insurance if you own a car. Car insurance is mandatory even if you do not drive the car. If you sustain damage with your car, the financial consequences can be severe. Car insurance is therefore definitely not simply a nice-to-have.

Any car insurance cover will allow you to hit the road. You decide how comprehensive you want the cover to be. It is a legal requirement to have at least Third-Party Liability Cover. This cover pays out for damage you cause to others with your car. If you also want to be insured for damage to your own car, you can opt for Third-Party Liability + Limited Cover or Third-Party Liability + Comprehensive Cover. You can also take out additional cover, such as Breakdown Assistance or Car Legal Expenses.

The costs of a car insurance in the Netherlands depend on the car itself, its age, the town/city you live in, your claim-free years and your annual mileage. The cover you choose also influences the premium you pay.

At ABN AMRO you can choose a Third-Party Liability, a Third-Party Liability + Limited Cover or a Third-Party Liability + Comprehensive Cover.

Applying for a car insurance in the Netherlands is easy. First choose the cover that suits you best, provide us with some details and calculate your premium . If you want, your car insurance can take effect immediately. Do you wish to change your cover? That is possible at any time.
For every car insurance you need the meldcode of your car. The meldcode of your car consists of 4 digits. These are the last 4 digits of your car's chassis or identification number. You will find this number on your registration certificate.

Yes, you can insure your car if you want to import it from abroad, for example. If your car is abroad, we will send you a letter of intent informing you that we are prepared to insure your car. Please call us in order to arrange this.
